April 28 session to talk about Hells Canyon mailboats
Super 8 Staff
Author and instructor Carole Simon-Smolinski will talk about the mailboats of Hells Canyon at a free presentation at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 28, at the Meadows Valley Public Library in New Meadows.
Starting in the late 1910s, the weekly Snake River mailboat from Lewiston to Johnson Bar became the lifeline for the miners, homesteaders and ranchers who lived and worked in Hells Canyon.
The boats, intrepid captains and the national and international attention their unique mail service attracted each contributes a fascinating chapter in the Hells Canyon saga.
For more than 20 years, Simon-Smolinski has been an instructor and scholar of Northwest history, specifically the north central area of Idaho.
Her work has included articles, books, talks and videos. Simon-Smolinski recently concluded 16 years as a history instructor at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston.
The program is funded in part by the Idaho Humanities Council. Light refreshments will be served by the Friends of the Library.
