Fiddle, chamber music camps to end with concerts

Public concerts in McCall will be the highlight of fiddle music and chamber music workshops to be held in McCall next week. The workshops will be hosted by Jana Jae, “The First Lady of Country Fiddle,” an Idaho native, now of Tulsa, Okla. The Idaho Fiddle Camp will be held Friday and Saturday for advanced to beginner fiddlers, while the Idaho Chamber Music Workshop is being held this week and feature expert classical coaching. The chamber music camp will conclude with a free public concert at 7 p.m. tonight at the McCall Community Congregational Church. Secesh fundraiser to help build fire station

The Secesh Fire District will hold its “Funraiser 2010” from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the fire station on Warren Wagon Road about 30 miles from McCall. The event will include free door prizes, a community yard sale, live and silent auctions, a backcountry bake sale and barbecue. Money raised from the event will go toward completion of the Secesh Meadows fire station. Among the items available in the auctions are a scenic flight for three, a new, 16-inch chain saw, a new 3,500-watt generator, a cord of wood delivered to McCall, a day of boating on Payette Lake for as many as four people with lunch included, a weekend condo vacation in McCall, and a golf package for a foursome on the McCall course.

Council Mountain Music Festival set for Aug. 20-21

The ninth annual Council Mountain Music Festival will be held Friday and Saturday, Aug. 20-21, with a bonus day of gospel music planned Sunday, Aug. 22. The festival will be held at Veterans Memorial Peace Park on U.S. 95 in Council. Performances begin at 6 p.m. Friday and continue until 10 p.m. that day, then run from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. The festival will offer a full spectrum of music, including bluegrass, rock, gospel and country appropriate for all ages. Lions Club will host a breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, in the Council City Park. Area churches are offering a barbecue lunch at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, with a full lineup of 12 acts to perform gospel and inspirational music from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

McCall on the Fly to celebrate aviation centennial

An air show on Saturday, Aug. 14, will be the highlight of the McCall on the Fly event next weekend at McCall Airport. The event will showcase 100 years of flying in Idaho, and there will be a display in the McCall Air Hangar showcasing aviation in the state. The air show, which is free, begins at 11 a.m. Aug. 14 with a skydiver drop with the United States flag while Vivian Driscoll sings the national anthem. Air show performers will be Greg Poe, Bob Finer and Mark Peterson who are all Idaho pilots as is the skydiver, Rob Herndon. There will be displays of military helicopters and airplanes, jets and antique aircraft as well radio controlled aircraft demos and jet fly-bys. Gates open at 9 a.m. and will be open to the public until 6 p.m. The event begins on Friday, Aug. 13 with a barbecue at 4 p.m., followed at 6 p.m. with safety seminars for pilots and ending at 9 p.m. with a free showing of the movie “Amelia” at the McCall RV Resort outdoor amphitheater. Air show performers will practice at 2 p.m. Friday and the public welcome to view the practice free. Pedestrian access to the airport will be through the gate near McCall Air. There will be no spectator vehicles allowed on the airport.

Airband, Dragball Contest set July 10 at Alpine The seventh annual Adult Airband and Dragball Contest has been scheduled for Saturday, July 10, at the Alpine Playhouse in McCall, featuring a lip-syncing contest and “drag” competition. The event is sponsored by Better Neighborhoods, a group dedicated to community improvement through performance therapy. Shows are at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. and admission is $5 for adults 17 and older, only at the door. M-D Art Club plans ‘Junk to Funk’ event May 15

Making fashion from materials that would normally be thrown away is the purpose of “Junk to Funk,” an “eco-fashion” event sponsored by the McCall-Donnelly High School Art Club. The eco-fashion show will be held Saturday, May 15, at the Commerce Art Building, 115 Commerce St., across from Les Schwab Tire. Desserts, an art show and live music will begin at 6:15 p.m., followed by the fashion show at 7 p.m. Suggested entry donation is $10 and includes admission and dessert. Proceeds will help the art club fund travel, community service projects and scholarships to student artists. The “wearable art” outfits should be created as a tribute to someone, and the designers can either wear their own creations or the club will provide a high school student as a model. Two open studio workshops to help create the outfits will be held Tuesday and May 6 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Whirling Circles Studio next to the Commerce Art Building. Studio time is free, and those attending should bring a roll of duct tape, hot glue gun (or one will be provided) and the salvaged materials they wish to use to create their outfits. Individuals or teams may make the eco-fashions. McCall-Donnelly High School drama students will present “Inherit the Wind” as their spring production starting Friday at the Alpine Playhouse in McCall. Inherit the Wind’ is an eloquent defense of a human being’s right to think, teach, and learn,” director Judy Anderson said. “As such, it is respectful of the contribution of both religion and science to the human search for meaning and connection. Starring as attorneys for defense and prosecution are Andy Bursness and Zach Bennett; Luke Jensen plays the biology teacher, Sarah Lenda is the minister’s daughter, and Logan Gullickson plays the Rev. Brown. Tim Daniels plays the cynical reporter from Baltimore, and John Gilmer plays the judge. Eighteen other students round out the cast starring as townspeople, witnesses, jury members and officials.

Brundage Mountain to hold pond skimming, Crazy Daze April 3

Brundage Mountain Resort has shifted the date of its annual Pond Skimming and Crazy Daze this year to Saturday, April 3, in an effort to increase participation in the event. A new event, Snow Battle, has been moved to Sunday, April 11. Crowd-favorite pond skimming will be held at Brundage Mountain Resort on April 3. “We solicited feedback from several guests and discovered they were having to make hard choices between some of their favorite outdoor spring events,” resort spokeswoman April Russell said. “Shifting the schedule this way will allow more of our loyal visitors to enjoy what has become a very popular, fun-filled day.” The new date also puts the Pond Skimming and Crazy Daze events at the end of spring break for area schools. It will fall on the same weekend as Gimme a Break Day on Sunday, April 4, which features free lift tickets for children age 17 and younger.

Curling championships to conclude Sunday

The seventh annual McCall Club Cup Championships in curling conclude on Sunday at Manchester Ice and Event Centre in McCall. The finals and matches for third and fourth place will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday. Teams in the finals are Stonestickers, Rolling Stones, WWB and Throwing Stones. The championship team gets to add its name to the McCall Cup trophy on display at the ice rink. The event is open to the public, and there is no admission charge.

The Little Ski Hill west of McCall will welcome spring this weekend with ski races and pond skimming. The fun starts with youth ski races both Saturday and Sunday. Registration starts at 8 a.m. with racing starting at 10 a.m. Races for skier cross and boarder cross will be held on Saturday, with registration starting at 10 a.m. and races at noon. On Sunday, participants will dress up in whacky costumes for pond skimming, in which they start out sliding on snow and end up in a frigid pool of water. The show starts at noon Sunday.

The seventh annual American Legion Chili Cook-off and dessert auction will be held Saturday, March 6, at the American Legion Hall in Cascade. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and chili entries to be judged must be on site by 5:30 p.m. Judging will take place between 6:15 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Entries should be hot and in a crock pot or similar appliance that can be plugged in and brought to 160 degrees to comply with health regulations. No chili entries will be accepted that use wild game as part of the recipe. There will also be dinner,dessert auction and a 50/50 raffle. An admission fee of $5 per person, and $2 for those 11 and younger, will be collected at the door. Chili chefs will be admitted free of charge.

The Holiday Inn Express-The Hunt Lodge again hosted the Craft Faire and Chocolate-Yum! event during the final weekend of the 2010 McCall Winter Carnival. The event ran from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and featured fresh, homemade fudge, brownies, cookies and other chocolate goodies, plus a free cup of hot cocoa. Many vendors were again be on hand selling crafts and decorations. Featured vendors included a metal sculptor offering unique home and outdoor metal works, coat racks, wagon wheel benches and bed headboards. A juniper furniture builder again displayed finished tables, chests, bed frames, lamps and cabinets. There were other vendors of jewelry, laser lights, bird houses, pottery and toys -- and a great time was had by all!

Live music will add to the festive atmosphere of the McCall Winter Carnival, with the main stage at Depot Park serving as the setting. The venue will be more fan-friendly this year with tents, a warming hut and a bonfire in front of the stage. Music during the opening ceremonies on Friday Jan. 29 will be provided by a disc jockey featuring “Fire Girls” at 6 p.m. spinning and twirling fireballs on wires. On Saturday Jan. 30, between 40 and 60 members of the Boise State University Marching Band will perform at 2 p.m. after their appearance in the Mardi Gras Parade. “Person People,” a hip-hop band, will follow until 5 p.m. and “Craving Dawn,” an alternative rock band, will close out the evening starting at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, will see “Alpenflow,” an electronic/dance band, performing from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Disc jockey music will be featured on Saturday, Feb. 6, starting at 2 p.m.

Film company to shoot snowmobile footage in McCall. BAM Film Productions of Pocatello will be in McCall next week to shoot footage for a snowmobile television program. The crew will be in town for six days starting Wednesday shooting footage for “Sledding The West.” The show is a snowmobile adventure travel log that airs from Nebraska to the Pacific Ocean on Altitude Sports and Entertainment Network and Comcast SportsNet. The show shot in McCall will air next October and November.

A second sculpture will be installed next week in Legacy Park as part of the McCall Arts and Humanities Council’s Art Walk project. The new sculpture is by Nampa artist Amber Conger. The curvaceous and whimsical “Flux” will sit at the south end of the park and is crafted of reclaimed steel, copper and hardware. Other Art Walk projects include Zella Bardsley’s “Stalactites,” also in Legacy Park, and Phil Wilcomb’s “Going to School,” located across from Chapala Mexican Restaurant on Railroad Avenue. The Art Walk is an effort to bring a variety of artwork to downtown McCall. Eventually, nine sites located within the McCall Urban Renewal District will host a diverse collection of artwork. Each piece is intended to be installed for one year, allowing for an ongoing rotation of forms and styles. “Responses to the new artwork and the project in general have been overwhelmingly positive,” said Tracey Kindall, director of the McCall Arts and Humanities Council. “Both visitors and locals seem to be really appreciative of the project.” Art Walk pieces may be purchased by individuals, businesses or public agencies.

The Foresters Club & Doghouse Saloon will host a benefit event for Vern Loveall starting at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27, at the club at 306 E. Lake St., McCall. Loveall, of Crusty’s Pizza, is recovering from surgery to remove a brain tumor, and proceeds from the event will be used to help offset the family’s expenses. Trees, decorations sought for Festival of Trees

The Friends of the McCall Library is seeking donations of artificial Christmas trees, wreaths, decorations and seasonal decor for the annual Festival of Trees. The Friends of the Library hosts the annual event each Thanksgiving week at the McCall Golf Course clubhouse. Local businesses, groups and individuals donate decorated and lighted Christmas trees, wreaths, centerpieces and holiday decorations which are then sold during a four-day silent auction. Film showing to aid Little Ski Hill

Teton Gravity Research will have two showings of its new ski and snowboard film, “Re:Session,” at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, at North Fork Lodge, and at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at the Alpine Playhouse. Doors open at 6 p.m. for both shows, and beer and wine will be available at North Fork Lodge. Admission is $10 per person, and all proceeds go to the Payette Lakes Ski Club, which operates the Little Ski Hill. The film, shot on both film and high-definition cameras, includes scenes from Alagna, Italy, during one of the deepest snow seasons on record, along with powder skiing in Poland, Colorado, Utah, Alaska and other locations.

The eighth annual Cascade Lake Run will start at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Van Wyck Park, with both 5 kilometer and 10km courses finishing at Cascade Medical Center. "End of Suburbia" Film showing

Sustainable Outlook for Long Valley will sponsor a showing of the award-winning independent film "End of Suburbia" at 7pm Monday November 17 at the Alpine Playhouse. The film is part of an outreach project by SOLV to stimulate discussion and ideas on how the area economy needs to change to be more resilient, diverse, energy independent and localized. The showing is free but donations will be accepted. The film will be followed by a discussion session.

Winter Fitness Classes

McCall Memorial Hospital's Center for Health Promotion is offering a class series on keeping fit through the winter, hosted by Olympian Lyle Nelson and local fitness experts. The classes will be held from 6:30pm to 8pm Tuesdays in the Allen-Nokes Center located on the hospital campus. The fee is $20 and registration can be done by calling 208-634-4061.

McCall Arts names New Director

Tracey Kindall of McCall has been named as the new executive director of the McCall Arts and Humanities Council. Kindall replaces Jenne Ruemelle as the council's part-time director. Ruemelle, who held her position for 11 years, resigned last summer to become the McCall-Donnelly School District's new volunteer coordinator. Kindall brings an extensive background in working with nonprofit organizations, as well as professional grant-writing and program development work.

McCall Ski Team accepting Registrants

The McCall Nordic Ski Team is ready to accept registrants for the upcoming 2008-2009 season. The team is a nonprofit club dedicated to the growth of recreational and competitive cross-country skiing in McCall. The team has after-school programs for children ages 7 to 18 and Masters programs for adults. Quilters Auction

The Pinehurst Quilt Club of Riggins will hold its annual craft auction on Saturday, October 8 at 11am with a preview starting at 10am. It will be held at the Assembly of God Fellowship Hall on Main St. in Riggins. There will be numerous items for auction in addition to the quilts such as tablerunners, place mats, wall hangings, books, quilt kits, juvenile items, holiday decor and more. Childrens Choir Rehearsals

The McCall Community Congregational Church has scheduled rehearsals for a children's choir starting October 13 that will be open to all youngsters from kindergarten through eighth grade. Inca Empire Presentation

A two-part presentation on the Inca Empire will be offered by Gordon McCall at the McCall Public Library at 7:30pm on Thursday, October 2 and Thursday, October 9. The Inca Empire series was preceded by a four-part program on the Pueblo people. Each presentation will include an interactive introduction, viewing of a video and discussion seasoned with free snacks.

Snowdon Sanctuary Open House

The Snowdon Wildlife Sanctuary in McCall willhold an open house from 11am to 2pm on Saturday, September 30, located off Lick Creek Rd. where the pavement ends. Lunch will be served from 11am to noon, followed by a short program and tour of the facility. This is the only time during the year the facility is open to the public, as minimal human contact with the animals being rehabilitated is necessary to assure their safe return to the wild. History Project Seeks Items for Book

The Valley County History Project will accept new photos and stories for the reprinting of "Pioneer Settlers and Pioneer Ranches" until Tuesday, September 9th. Photos will be scanned at the Nelle Tobias Research Center at the Valley County History Museum complex in Roseverry between 10am and noon.
